This opera house often presents performances from the Italian repertoire: Donizetti, Rossini, Verdi
and Puccini with occasional excursions into German and French opera. The State Opera (then called the German Theatre) opened in
1887. Until World War II the theatre was regarded as one of the finest German opera houses outside Germany. Immediately after the
war it changed its name to the Smetana Theatre and later again to the State Opera
